about

As Producer/DJ Teck-Zilla continues his slew of single releases, he delivers yet another anthem with his latest one, “ONE CONTINENT”. The track is a quintessential posse cut that brings together 6 notch lyricists from the motherland to showcase their lyrical prowess.
The record produced by Teck-Zilla himself is as anthemic as they come and it’s comprised of a rich cinematic texture and hard-hitting drum grooves that reaches a crescendo with triumphant horns on the chorus section.
Setting off the first verbal shot is Malawi’s Dominant 1 who clears the path with the force of an African Elephant on the rampage. Merging bravado with Black African excellence he proudly states “Let’s discuss the continent/Build prominence/Multiply accomplishments, My name is Dominant” and acknowledges the daily struggles with “I spit real hot ‘cause of the climate/Handled all the pressure, transformed into a diamond”. This is followed by Shu-Kid from Kenya whose laidback flow complements Dominant 1’s rugged demeanor. Not one to be outdone, Shu-Kid proceeds to shatter all types of stereotypes about Africa with lines like “We ain’t in the scriptures but we taught ‘em how to paragraph/ Put some respect on the motherland when you mention us” and closes it out with a frank statement “And whether we are the future homie, it’s no debate/ if you ain’t talking ‘bout reparations then we ain’t gon’ liaise”. Dominant 1 then comes through with a mantra-type hook solidifying the unification of these African brothers who have teamed up to deliver African Excellence in its purest form.
Zambia’s very own rap extraordinaire Holstar and Nigerian super lyricist Boogey take guard on the second verse with distinct and evocative bars. Holstar pours adulations on his African sisters with lines like “Nefertiti on my side and it’s Sheba, Inkling to Amina with the vocals of a diva/My African queens deserve that pedestal; different shades of melanin take care never bed a fool” while Boogey poses some thought-provoking questions regarding life, God and religion with bars like “Eyes open, look over what you overlooked/Are you worshipping a god or, white men who wrote a book?”

The third verse is anchored by veteran Jamaican rapper Five Steez and Portugal-based Zimbabwean emcee Synik respectively. Five Steez leads the charge, bridging the gap between the motherland and the Carribean while Synik closes it out with some reflective bars about how history was distorted to fit another race’s ulterior motive.

Overall, “ONE CONTINENT” aims to give the world a piece of what Africa has to offer in the world of hip-hop and even though Afrobeats is the raving genre at the moment, we rappers have something to say and everybody must listen.
