‘Enter The Double Dragon II’

‘Enter The Double Dragon II’ is the sequel to the EP of the same name by Nigerian veteran emcee/videographer Psalmurai and producer/DJ Teck-Zilla. While the first EP was 3 track short, this sequel ramps up the ante with 7 tracks that continue the duo’s fusion of martial arts and hip-hop with a unique twist.
Again, it’s produced entirely by Teck-Zilla who blends exotic and obscure samples with an original composition comprising dusty keys, warm bass-lines, punchy breakbeats and vocal samples from classic run-run shaw kung fu flicks, Japanese anime and 70s cartoons.
In the vocal department, Psalmurai is in rare form as he weaves a variety of concepts ranging from self-assertiveness fused with a bit of Nigerian political history (“Gang Star”) , Mixed martial arts (“King Of Fighters”), dangerous seductive women (“Crocodile Tears (Cries)”) to vampire slaying adventures(“Silver Slugs”). There is quite a lot to unpack as the rapper weaves vivid rhyme schemes and his characteristic laid-back flow seamlessly over the cinematic backdrop laid out by Teck-Zilla.
Other notable cuts include “Kintsugi”, a track inspired by a Japanese style of using gold to mend broken pottery, and “Bushido Cheat Codes”, mid-tempo jazz infused cut that displays pure bravado in the face of a dying culture where gimmicky rap is preferred to everything else.
