Track Breakdown
This track takes excerpts from an interview by social activist Aisha Yesufu where she spoke on the state of affairs in the country. I made use of a somber pad on this one in order to draw people in slowly and ended it with Yesufu making a statement in pidgin English about being ready to die for a better Nigeria.

I was inspired by this internet character who goes by the moniker Black Amaru. The makes funny rap videos and I came across on where he rapped about the excesses of SARS and that became the basis of this track. The intro is from a video lady made during the protest from her house when she heard gunshots and it’s quite depressing as the panic and fear in her voice goes unnoticed. The sample is a familiar one and just fit the theme of trying to find sanity in a crazy city.

This has an upbeat mood with driving afrobeat elements. The intro is Seun Kuti commenting on the speech President Buhari gave on the 22nd of October. The outro is his brother Femi Kuti speaking on police brutality

I went for a medley type arrangement for this one. It starts with an audio of 2 men witnessing someone being killed by the police. The voice says “this one has been killed” in Yoruba). It then transitioned into a live report from a citizen witnessing hoodlums ravaging Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State. The 3rd act has a cinematic texture and features audio of a mob looting on Bode Thomas Street in Lagos.(Learn more HERE). Had to end it on a lighter note of a popular on air personality who made light of President Buhari’s speech.

This track is more of a somber note and contains excerpts of audio during the protest in Surulere on the 12th of October which I was in attendance. I recorded it with my phone not knowing it would come in handy. This was during the time the DPO(Divisional Police Officer) of the police station came out to speak to us and some of the protesters there shared their grievances with him.

The last track is actually a beat I made after the unfortunate outcome of the EndSARS protest on the 12th of October. It was peaceful for the most part but at the end, at least 2 people got time and several more were brutalized and detained. I was fortunate enough to stay out of harms way that day and after going through winding back streets I got home and later made this beat the same evening.
